The trend is unmistakable…for some time now there has been a whole wave of young German musicians who are using the democratized technical possibilities of music-recording – an expensive studio is no longer necessary to achieve good results – to implement their idea of modern, German-language (Pop)-music. They are also often inspired by the New Wave of earlier times, with personal lyrics and catchy melodies. Edwin Rosen, Konstantin Unwohl and most recently Streichelt are leading the way. Heinrich Herz from Hamburg is in the starting blocks and now DRÜCKEBERGER (German for „coward“ or „slacker“) from Saarbrücken is releasing his debut album on YOUNG & COLD RECORDS.
To speak of „New German New Wave“ (shortened in Germany „NNDW“), as some media do, is probably a bit exaggerated, because German lyrics have long been established in the music world, at least since bands like Spillsbury and especially Wir Sind Helden enjoyed great success in the early 2000s. But a certain trend is still recognizable.
DRÜCKEBERGER has released a few individual tracks and an EP digitally since the end of 2022, reviving the good old 2:30-minutes-song. It doesn’t take more than this time, a good melody and personal but unembarrassing lyrics to inspire a young audience. Edwin Rosen proves this again and again with concerts that sell out ultra-quickly and physical releases that are now trading at high prices.
DRÜCKEBERGER’s first album „Armselig“ (means „pitiful“) will surely show this quickly, as it features one catchy tune after the other in the classic LP size of 10 songs. For example, „Sterne“ („Stars“), an almost kitschy – but highly likeable – Pop-song that DRÜCKEBERGER recorded with the sisters-duo Ostara. That already has chart potential. Thematically more introverted due to the topic and musically more atmospheric, „Sterben“ („Ding“) is a song to listen to, but is still always catchy. “Sanftes Blau” („Soft Blue“) shows that DRÜCKEBERGER can also be weirder and darker. It even brings back a few memories of german act Drangsal.
Even if you can find some well-known acts to compare to, DRÜCKEBERGER still goes its own way and will surely quickly establish itself in this row. The time for wave-popppy, German-language music seems to be good, especially because a young audience has obviously been waiting to find their own new stars who come from their midst.
