EQUINOXIOUS – El Desafio EP

In Mexiko gab es schon in den 80er Jahren eine kleine Electro- und Wave-Szene,von der man in Europa aber nichts mitbekam. Als ab Ende der 90er Jahre Bands wie Lacrimosa, Catastrophe Ballet, Goethes Erben und andere von enthusiastischen Fans zu Konzerten eingeladen und gleichzeitig durch das Internet der Austausch erleichtert wurde, explodierte die Darkwave-Szene in Mexiko förmlich. Spätestens ab den 2010er Jahren kam immer mehr Musik von dort auch nach Europa. In den letzten Jahren tauchten zahlreiche neue Acts auf, von Stockhaussen über Isotropia und Werner Karloff bis Frio Y Vacio, die sich allesamt im Darkwave-Electro-Postpunk-Bereich bewegten. Und EQUINOXIOUS…

Seit 2014 hat das Projekt EQUINOXIOUS von Rogelio Serrano zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen vorgelegt und sich damit einen guten Namen gemacht. Serrano arbeitet auch auf der aktuellen „El Desafio“-EP wieder überwiegend mit analogem Equipment, er bietet damit aber nicht nur Retro-Sounds im Stile der 80er – obwohl die natürlich auch vorkommen -, sondern schlägt den Bogen über 90er Jahre Darkwave hin zu modernen Sounds und Rhythmen.

Da verbinden sich ohrwurmige Synthpop-Melodien mit Industrial-Sounds im Stile der „Some Great Reward“-Phase von Depeche Mode, tanzbarer 90er Dark-Electro mit fast schon (Analog-) Techno-Sounds und Minimal-Electro mit carpenteresken Soundtrack-Momenten. „Recayendo“ ist der Ohrwurm, der Hörer/Innen gleich am Anfang der EP in den Bann zieht, “Derribar“ wird für Bewegung auf den Tanzflächen von Electro-Partys sorgen, „Mudas Escamas“ würde auf den Soundtrack zu einer weiteren „Blade Runner“-Fortsetzung passen und „Dos Umbrales“ wären in den 90ern auch als Depeche Mode-B-Seite durchgegangen.

Die „El Desafio“-EP ist einer der seltenen Glücksfälle von Electro, der sowohl in den Clubs zum Tanzen als auch zu Hause zum Zuhören funktioniert. Zudem ist die Produktion erfrischend klischeelos, so dass die EP auch für ein Publikum über die Schwarze Szene hinaus funktioniert.

There was already a small electro and wave scene in mexico in the 80s, then without any notice in Europe. Since 2014, Rogelio Serrano’s project has presented numerous releases and thus made a good name for itself. On the current “El Desafio” EP, Serrano again works mainly with analog equipment, but not only presents retro sounds in the style of the 80s – although of course they occur – but also draws the line from 90s darkwave to modern sounds and rhythms.

Catchy Synthpop melodies combine with Industrial-sounds in the style of Depeche Mode’s “Some Great Reward” phase, danceable 90s Dark-Electro with almost (analogue) Techno-sounds and Minimal-Electro with carpenteresque Soundtrack-moments. “Recayendo” is the catchy tune that captivates listeners right at the beginning of the EP, “Derribar” will get things moving on the dance floors of Electro parties, “Mudas Escamas” could be on the Soundtrack to another “Blade Runner“-sequel and „Dos Umbrales“ would also have been a good Depeche Mode B-side in the ’90s
